Discernment features work by emerging artist Yanessa Martinez. Martinez is a local, conceptual artist working primarily in acrylic. Her haunting paintings deal with the displacement she perceives in her generation that has resulted from recent, global upheaval. Martinez’s art, like her generation, brings into question social constructs that have formerly been taken for granted. Her pieces balance the spiritual and existential, inspiring foreboding but also hope in the viewer.
Discernment will be up in the Holland Project Micro Gallery at Bibo Coffee Shop on 945 Record Street from October 16 to November 10. The closing reception will be held on Wednesday, November 8 from 6pm to 8pm.
