| It is critical that Nevada provide a well rounded Arts program from K-12 and include higher education. Nevada communities deserve the opportunity to attend arts activities. Art programs for communities to participate must also be available. We must create relationships through Public/Private Partnerships that can provide funding and support for the Arts. |

If elected, I will work with the legislature to find ways to keep our arts programs properly funded.
Nevada must augment its economic engines to sustain critical quality of life areas. |

| The arts have enriched my life immeasurably. I have performed on small and large stages around the world as a singer and actor. I completely agree that the arts enhances life, making it richer and more meaningful. It is my fervent hope that the budget crisis Nevada finds itself in can be restructured so that arts education does not incur any further cuts. As a general value statement, I absolutely support arts education at all levels of classroom instruction. It behooves all of us to do what we can to support the continuation and funding of such vital services. |

Any candidate who tells you that he/she will fund the arts first should is just trying to buy your vote. When the economy is turned around, things will be different. |

| As a working professional artist, and the owner of Magicalrealist Gallery for the past 8 years, I understand the challenges faced by artists, crafters, and other small businesspeople in this economy. What we need most of all is for our customers to have money to buy things from us, and that means we have to fix the economy. My plan is to stimulate the economy by adding freedom: legalize microbusiness, have a total tax holiday for all new startups in their first year, end marijuana prohibition, have full adult rights for all adults 18 and over, and legal gay marriage, which will encourage travel to Nevada and fill the resorts and hotels, providing jobs in the hospitality industry. Full hotels encourage the building of more hotels, which will provide jobs for construction workers. We can cut waste and red tape and get better results by making every school an empowerment school and having choice. Let's get Nevada booming again. Fix the economy, and the state budget fixes itself. My plan will also result in spending $500 million less per year on prisons due to legalizing marijuana, and having increased tax revenues from increased economic activity and from taxes on marijuana and on the legal brothel industry. Like any other small businessperson, what artists and crafters need is for people who want to buy our art to have jobs and money in their wallets. Sales not subsidies. We want to sell our art, not get handouts from the NAC. Let's get Nevada booming again. That is not to say there is no role for government in the arts. As the founding Chairman of City Lights Artists' Co-op, I worked with the Henderson Redevelopment Agency to get a bricks and mortar gallery inside the Redevelopment zone. I organized the group into an IRS certified nonprofit org with its own gallery, City Lights Art Gallery, in 6 months. The Redevelopment Agency worked with us to provide a spark for bringing business back to the downtown Henderson area. Redevelopment Zones are a great example of how a small, timely investment by local government can get things rolling and help a new nonprofit org or for-profit business venture get started, providing a temporary hand up, not fostering ongoing dependence. 9 years later, the Gallery has moved from Water St. to Army St. but is still going strong, and many of the artists who were in on City Lights' birth have now moved on to even higher levels of our art careers; City Lights provided an excellent way for artists to launch ourselves to new heights. City Lights also helped revitalize the neighborhood, which was the city's goal in helping us get started. City Lights Artists Co-op is a success story, and it's a local story. Its founding was my achievement as a leader and the achievement of all the artists who came together to get it done. Its continued existence shows what individual artists can do when we work together for common goals. I've shown I can get things done on time and in a way that will last. I'll bring the same work ethic and abilities to the State Assembly. |

| I have been at the forefront of economic development as chairman of the Clark County Commission. I will do the same as Governor.
We are a unique state that can use the wealth of our talented artists, artisans and professionals to create a creative industry and nonprofit arts cooridor that can assist in diversification of our economy.
My economic development plan – The Virtual Crossroads – includes ideas for job creation in the short term and strategies to transform our economy in the long term by improving education, supporting tourism, and balancing our economy with new industries like renewable energy.
As Governor I want to :
•Strengthen our schools to strengthen our economy.
•Create jobs now by prioritizing capital spending on immediate job-creating projects.
•Capitalize a Nevada Energy Fund to establish Nevada’s leadership in clean technology.
•Forge partnerships between higher education and private industry to develop Nevada’s workforce.
•Support tourism by treating Nevada’s greatest places as key components of our economic development strategy.

| It is critically important to the citizens of Nevada that we maintain a strong culture of providing arts, in all its forms, to our citizens and visitors. A vibrant economy and well educated work force depend on having access to the arts. Government at all levels should support the arts through funding and other measures. It is also my goal to see a permanent art collection on display in the halls of the Nevada Legislative Building. |

| Briefly, I support Arts Education as an integral part of a comprehensive K-12 curriculum; not merely 'a luxury' or as "extra-curricular activities." I know from direct, personal experience that arts education is the arena wherein math, reading and writing first come together as applied skills, and provide the context in which these skills continue to develop over a lifetime.
"Reno is ArTown" and "Burning Man" are world-class events which are important aspects of Nevada culture, independent of any 'cost/benefit analyses' or economic/budgetary 'concerns'; but should not be excluded from governmental support for that (or any other) reason. Likewise, the Reno Philharmonic, Art Museum and our Opera are too important to rest entirely upon the patronage of our more fortunate citizens; therefore, I believe that a complete overhaul of our revenue collection is necessary to provide a stable economic base from which all Nevadans may draw support for the necessities of life - including the Arts.
I would like also to see our Nevada Film Office, the Nevada Film Alliance, and the Nevada Labor Council coordinate effectively to bring more and more top-quality motion picture and television work to Nevada, not just from Hollywood, but from around the world. |

| In my 12 years on the Carson City Board of Supervisors, I have worked hard to create economic development and revitalization of our Carson City downtown. A key component of this revitalization is special events, highlighting the unique and extensive cultural talents in our community.
I championed the purchase of the former St. Teresa's Church as a performance hall for the Brewery Arts Center, and I look forward to working with other communities to rescue historic buildings and use these facilities for cultural presentations.
I also want to introduce new industry into Nevada that relies upon creativity and cultural talents to provide new careers for our children. The digital media industry appeals to our youth and can provide high paying jobs in the future. |

I am a staunch believer that to educate the whole child, arts education is an integral partner. Together the academics and the arts provide to the individual the means to a quality life and career. |
