Globally, rock art is among the oldest and most enduring of the arts. The high deserts of Nevada contain spectacular, and often hidden, works of art; a palette of abstract and representational images carved and painted on the boulders and caves of Nevada’s stark and evocative landscapes. Over a period of more than 10,000 years, Native American peoples and their ancestors inscribed special places scattered across vast and arid lands with the mysterious symbols that we call rock art.The Nevada Rock Art Foundation is the only State-wide rock art advocacy group in Nevada, and is working to help bridge the gap in resources essential to protect and preserve these artistic treasures. Cited as “..the most vital and effective rock art foundation in the country, if not the world” (William D Hyder, ARARA Past President), nraf is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that actively promotes the protection and public appreciation of rock art in Nevada and surrounding areas.
These images on stone are one of the only ways we can see the aesthetic and cultural practices of the earliest inhabitants of North America, and they are being threatened and destroyed by uninformed and unsupervised public visitation that is manifesting in acts of vandalism, graffiti, and theft.
NRAF works with private, local, state and federal agencies to help bridge the gap in resources essential to protect and preserve these artistic treasures. As a non-profit organization, nraf uses its corps of skilled volunteers led by a small professional staff to make sure that we are doing all we can to support the protection and preservation of rock art through our three primary programs. We have shared the results of our fieldwork with the public through our website, newsletter, and public lectures, all in an effort to educate Nevadans about this cultural treasure that exists, sometimes literally, right in their backyards.
