RENO, Nevada (May 24, 2010) -- Rainshadow Community Charter High School (RCCHS) students (www.rainshadowcchs.org <http://www.rainshadowcchs.org><http://www.rainshadowcchs.org/> ) will hold their bi-annual art show, benefit and sale on Thursday, May 27, 2010 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Proceeds from the show and sale will directly benefit the students and educational programs for the charter high school on Vesta Street in Reno.
To culminate this event, an original lithograph by Joan Miró, one of Spain’s Most Famous Surrealist Artists and Sculptor will be raffled off. The lithograph titled Volume II, Image V was done in 1963 and is valued at $4000.00.

The benefit will have fine art work for sale by some of the greatest Modern Masters of the 20th Century such as Picasso, Dalí, Miró and Chagall and others. Also for sale will be contemporary art by Mark H. Campbell. A Rollins College recipient of the Cornell Fine Arts Scholarship Campbell’s work hangs in five permanent museum collections in the United States and in private collections. International art dealer Mark Steingard and local art dealer Robbin Lee are coordinating the benefit and sale with the teaching staff from Rainshadow. Art by Rainshadow students will also be for sale. Students receive 70% of their sale price and 30% goes to replace supplies. Proceeds will help in providing specific items needed to run the school. Rainshadow’s mission is to empower and teach the students in learning how knowledge and skills they acquire can be applied to meaningful, real-world projects to accomplish their own goals. School supplies are needed for this successful and innovative school where most reluctant students find reasons to attend school and become engaged in learning.
“This benefit is about giving back to our community,” said Steingard. “I went to college with the help of my high school advisor who believed in me. The students at Rainshadow need the community to support and believe in them so they will excel and lead a productive life. Our future youth in Reno should not be denied the opportunity to learn and get a solid education.”
Steingard received his doctorate from Long Island University in 1961. In its ninth decade of providing access to the American dream through excellence in higher education, Long Island University is a diverse, doctoral institution of higher learning. He went on to become a successful art dealer selling investment caliber Modern Masters for 40 years. He worked and shared personal friendships with Salvador Dalí, Karel Appel, Alexander Calder, Tom Wesselmann, Paul Jenkins, Sam Francis, and many more other artists. Steingard has an exceptional positive track record at predicting art market trends. He and his wife Carol, travel the globe, networking with museums, art dealers and influential private collectors. He has created and enhanced financial portfolios for seasoned and novice collectors worldwide.
Raised in San Diego in a Catholic orphanage, Lee has worked with and has been mentored by Steingard since 2006. Prior to that she owned a successful public relations, marketing and special event company for 15 years. Prior to that she was a trained and licensed vocational nurse in San Diego. Her dedication and impressive achievements in the art business is due to her intensive research skills and time spent studying the artists, history and the stories behind the art.
“Learning about art, the artists and history has reshaped how I feel and think about the past, the present and the future," said Lee. I am honored to help the students. To know about what the world was like historically has taught me about the artists, the writers, poets and thinkers and governments that have ruled and shaped our world.”
RCCHS students are typically indigent, sometimes homeless, or have limited financial support. As Rainshadow is a public, charter school, students are not required to pay tuition. The school has undergone a major transformation over the past year moving to a new building, adding a culinary arts program to its other programs: an organic agriculture program, basketball team, drama club, art and film programs, and science and technology programs. With the addition of the culinary arts program, the school has added a coffee shop open to the public. It features freshly baked goods prepared by the students. Hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with all sales benefiting the school. Rainshadow also works with many community groups like The Holland Project, which utilizes the facility to provide all ages music and art events. Art show sale proceeds will go towards supporting all of these innovative programs, basic day-to-day supplies and will also go towards the building lease, maintenance, utilities, salaries, and benefits. All of the programs at Rainshadow have a focus on getting students competitive in our modern and ever changing world.
Founded in 2003, RCCHS is an alternative learning environment that is community based and project oriented. Rainshadow students earn 22.5 credits in specific areas in order to earn a regular high school diploma; students will need to successfully complete at least 45 classes. The school and its teaching staff are dedicated to successfully graduating high school students with the tools, the motivation and the attitudes essential for productive life-long learning. The localized interdisciplinary curriculum works to involve students in authentic learning situations and classroom events that allow students to become involved in the learning process. Schedules are designed to allow students the maximum amount of freedom of choice while meeting the requirements of Nevada State standards and providing a regular high school diploma. Since its founding, Rainshadow has graduated 53 students. The 2010 graduating class has 26 students.
