Stand Up For The ARTS
Did you know that public funding to the Nevada Arts Council (NAC) supports arts and arts education programs and activities in communities throughout the state? Did you know that in 2010, the NAC awarded 170 grants to schools, arts organizations, educators and artists to support workshops, artist residencies, arts education classes and other innovative programs that served more than 750,000 children? That’s just one service of the NAC. Those of us who Stand Up for the ARTS believe that the NAC is a vital state agency.
For an extremely modest investment, NAC has a major impact in schools and communities in Nevada. After a 43% cut during the last legislative session, the NAC is doing its good work with just 3 cents of every $1,000 of state funds. That’s a fraction of a sliver of the state budget. Those of us who Stand Up for the ARTS want to protect the NAC’s small but critical budget.
What’s Our Goal?
- To let our legislators know that this issue — public funding for the arts and the Nevada Arts Council — is important to us, to our families, our communities and our state. It is an essential element of the state’s investment in our future.
- To ask our legislators to maintain public funding for the arts in Nevada by supporting a flat budget for the Nevada Arts Council.
- Reducing the budget of the Nevada Arts Council again —3 cents for every thousand dollars spent of state spending spent—won’t help fill the holes we all are desperate to fill, but it will destroy the work of thousands since the agency’s inception in 1967. It will deny Nevada a chance to use creativity as a road to recovery.
Support for public funding for the arts through the Nevada Arts Council runs as deep as Lake Tahoe and as high as Wheeler Peak. Why? Because we know that an investment in the arts today is an investment in the future – for our children, our communities, our state and our nation. Now, more than ever, Nevada needs the arts.
Who Should Stand Up for the ARTS?
Anyone who cares about the future of Nevada! If you are a parent, an artist, a student, an elder, a business owner—we all care about the future of Nevada. We all benefit on a daily basis by the services provided by the creative industry.
