To tell a story, you need a character. To tell a compelling story, you need a realistic character. How is this achieved? Honesty. We all have sides we’d prefer to hide from others. We’ve all done things we’re ashamed of. We’re all flawed. It’s these aspects of a personality that make one interesting, these flaws that arouse empathy in a reader. Whether writing nonfiction or writing from the point of view of a fictional character, it is the secret things that must make it to the page. We, as writers, must tell the truths others aren’t brave enough to share. In my workshops, I teach truth-telling above all things. The topics vary to encompass all of the elements of quality prose, including characterization, setting, plot, theme, voice, critique and self-evaluation.place holder text goes here.
