Orr, J. Michael

Artist J. Michael Orr graduated from San Francisco State College, later pursuing graduate work at Golden Gate College. He also attended the California College of Arts and Crafts. He and his wife live in the small community of Verdi, Nevada.

Orr’s background includes work in both the Criminal Justice and Medical professions. He left these professions to become a full time artist, gaining recognition throughout California’s Napa Valley wine country. Affiliations in the Napa Valley included his own gallery as well as the Jessel Gallery. He was also represented by the prestigious Cottage Gallery in Carmel, California and the Liberty Fine Art Gallery in Reno, Nevada. The artist was recently selected by the city of Reno to exhibit at the city’s McKinley Arts and Culture Center. This exhibition will begin on May 18, 2015 and continue for 7 weeks. The artist has also conducted teaching workshops while living in the Napa Valley. His originals and fine art prints are collected world wide.

Orr completed commissions for renowned wineries including Robert Mondavi, Domaine Chandon, Christian Brothers, Franciscan, Inglenook, Robert Craig, Folie a Deux, V. Sattui, Sterling Vineyards, Beringer Vineyards, and Buena Vista. He was also commissioned by Spring Mountain Vineyards in the Napa Valley to produce the first “Falcon Crest" art poster celebrating the famous TV series that aired during the late '80s and early '90s. Much of the program was filmed at the winery estate home.

A published writer and Napa Valley Wine Country consultant, his book, A Day or Two in the Napa Valley has been proclaimed as “One of the best travel guides ever written for those visiting the Napa Valley. “ He has conducted “ private “ wine tours of the Napa Valley for individuals and corporations from around the world.

His artwork is a reflection of his fascination with the ethereal beauty of God’s creation, especially the stunning luminescent Nevada skies and surrounding Sierra Nevada Mountains and lakes. The artist’s paintings are accomplished by combining special acrylics and mixed mediums to achieve brilliant iridescent glowing effects. Each work is rendered on premium stretched canvas or board. Most pieces don’t require a frame, can be hung as is, and will compliment most contemporary decors.

Orr’s philosophy regarding his work is simple. He sums it up by referring to a friend's advice years ago. “If one wishes to be creative, take lessons from the creator.”

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands “
Psalm 19 : 1
