Artist Profile: Beverly deGero
Beverly deGero is a multi-media artist specializing in nature subjects. Her work as a photographer, clay artist and writer is an expression of the connection between nature and spirituality with a Native American slant. (She is a member of the Ojibway Tribe.) "As an artist, I’m mostly self-taught with adult education, college courses and some wonderful mentoring along the way. I’ve completed the classical drawing course and begun the watercolor course (The Charles Bargue Traditional 19th Century Atelier Training Program) taught by Maria J. Smith in Twin Falls, Idaho," she says.
She has shown her work in Twin Falls, Boise and Sun Valley in Idaho, in Jarbidge, Nevada (when an appropriate venue existed) and at her studio at the Jarbidge Canyon Retreat Center. She was a member of the Old Towne Gallery artist cooperative in Twin Falls, Idaho and, in 2009 her work was featured in the Jarbidge Centennial Art Show at the Northeastern Nevada Museum in Elko, Nevada.
"I have often been called upon to provide educational opportunities in the arts for the people in our remote and rural area. Several years ago, I presented art classes for students at the Jarbidge School. When the school closed, I was asked to provide arts education to the home-schooled students and thus began a series of educational opportunities in the arts that I called “Creativity Circles,” which were offered in a multi-generational format. In 2003, I promoted the idea of starting the Jarbidge Arts Council and acted as Board President for the first three years and a member of the Board for three more," she adds.
She is currently teaching a course she developed entitled Ranch Kids: Adventures in Creativity, Arts & Culture at the local one-room schoolhouse, Three Creek School in Southern Idaho.
For the past 20 years, degree has lived in remote Jarbidge Canyon where she is in the process of forming the Jarbidge Canyon Retreat Center: An Earth & Art Institute. 'The Art Institute part of my vision is to offer artist retreats, creativity and arts events, shows and classes in this spectacular natural setting. The Earth Institute is becoming an eco/sustainability center offering demonstrations and educational opportunities in fields such as alternative energy, Permaculture, organic gardening, energy/water conservation and many more skills and techniques."
